46 C ‘danger’ heat index forecast in Metro Manila, 2 other areas

MANILA, Philippines The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned until Friday that a “dangerous” heat index of 46 C could be experienced in three areas of the country, including Metro Manila.

The other two are Cavite and Pangasinan, the state weather bureau said.

Pagasa forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said the heat index over Nueva Ecija and Olongapo City was likely to reach 45 degrees Celsius, while more areas in the country would experience temperatures ranging from 40 degrees Celsius to 44 degrees Celsius.

According to Pagasa’s effects-based classification, the heat index of 42 degrees Celsius to 51 degrees Celsius falls below the danger level at which heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, while heat stroke is likely with continued exposure.

Meanwhile, Aurelio said the easterlies and the intertropical convergence zone affect most parts of the country as they bring isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, especially in the late afternoon or at night.

“In general, the country can expect good weather with clear skies again until this weekend,” Aurelio said.

He reiterated Pagasa’s warnings to limit time spent outdoors, especially from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
